At Pennsic, when there are somewhere around 4-500 men on the field -- this is just an estimate, btw, as I've never paid any attention to the actual numbers that participate in the field battle -- they break the action very, very frequently -- as in, every couple of minutes, at the very longest. At that point, the volunteers go to work, bringing water bottles to the fighters. Anyone who's been recently 'killed' stands and clears off, too. Really rather impressive, though it is generally a minute's worth of fighting followed by five minutes worth of watering. ;) There's almost always someone who suffers from heatstroke, though.
