For comfort books I have to add any Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, James Ellroy, and Jim Thompson. The Travis McGee books by John D. MacDonald, especially The Deep Blue Good-By are great. McGee has the life I want: Sit on a houseboat slacking off until you run out of money, then solve a mystery, get paid and return to slacking. Also, the Fletch novels by Gregory McDonald are good for a laugh and a quick read.
