Someone may have already suggested this (I haven't caught the entire thread-
just joined today) but for SciFi what about the Heinlein young adult books?
Tunnel in the Sky, Podkayne <SP?> of Mars, Starman Jones, etc? Even some of
his more "adult" stuff is pretty good for most yougins- I really REALLY
liked Glory Road and The Moon is a Harsh Mistress when I was 12-13 years
old- but then I was a weird kid ::grin::
