To tell the truth, I'm hoping for a few surprises. There seem to be
several "obvious" things, as though he is finally filling in holes he
has only teased us with before. Fulfillment of that desire is somewhat
like having opened all the Christmas presents.

This did not have the impact it otherwise would have if we hadn't read
_Issola_. In a way, _Issola_ was a spoiler for this book. Like,
Zithra/Zerika, I recognized Morrolan immediately. And Teldra. It was
nice to have Miska tossed in there unexpectedly. He reminds me of
Devera, showing up in people's dreams. It was fun to meet the
Necromancer. Knowing beforehand that she was a Demon did not spoil her
introduction in this book.

How much are we willing to wager that Roanna & Piro will make a match of
it? That is one of the surprises I'm hoping for; that the obvious
matches don't turn out. I suspect Ibronka & Sh...I can't remember his
name. The Dzur who is shacking up with Lewchan(?) who is from a
different house and Paarfi was shocked at their blatant lack of morals.
Anyway, there could be an interesting development there, if the two
young Dzurs get together, because he'd have to break off w/ Lewchan
first.

Yeah, I get the feeling that Zerica is one of those admire-from-afar
types whom we will never be permitted to know very well. I wondered how
she had all these powers, coming out of the Paths of the Dead with the
Orb, that she was able to speak to Sethra and look in on Piro & team. It
didn't seem like psionic contact, because she seemed to actually see
them, and Sethra seemed to see her. At least, that was my impression. If
that's a side effect of being the Empress with a New Orb (not new
really, but better than before), it certainly wasn't apparent to Vlad.

I loved getting a new Khaavren romance. I have to admit I like Paarfi's
writing better than Brust's! :P
