I don't think Steve would ever mislead us. Card players are notoriously 
honest people.
It makes perfect sense that the phoenix just appear when needed. 
Maybe the gods just 'zap' the sperm and/or egg of the parent(s) and ,BAM, 
we've gotta winner.
