What if we readers "freely admit that [your] subtleties are
sometimes so far beyond us as to leave us confused as to theme,
plot, subplot, and, in general, what exactly the Master is
trying to tell us (all the while, the [author] may rest assured,
we are admiring his skillfully wrought speeches and fine
distinction of mood and meter)"?
