The gods serve the Cycle (I think) - and I suspect the Cycle was behind Adron's Mess, even if Paarfi is describing events accurately - so it may well be that Mario was a Jhereg for a good reason - he was the best soul available to do an impossible task, the kind of thing that (who knows) might qualify one for godhood, after the gods got the news from the Cycle that It's All In The Plan.
