I had a physics/chem prof in HS that insisted geeks invented language. 
They were near-sighted, you see, and so couldn't hit the broad side of a 
mammoth with a spear .... from inside the mammoth. So in order to 
survive, our proto-geek ancestors invented language to ... as you say, 
write poetry in order to get laid.
