There's a marvelous scene in one of the Lone Wolf & Cub comics that this reminds me of. Pages and pages go by of the two samurai staring at each other without moving, while, in a slightly-different artistic style, we see the mental playing-out of "What will happen if I attack *now*?" over and over, until he finds a version that he's willing to try and bring about.
