Amber -> Dragaera?

There does seem to be certain similarity in the names.  I think there's
a different series that's a closer match in this particular case -- can
anyone think of a well-known fantasy series hero that is an elven 
sorcerer who wields a large black soul-devouring sword?  There are a
number of other parallels between the two, ranging from the obvious
to the strained.
