It informs you that an update has occurred, gives you some of the gist, and provides a link that takes you directly to it. This is the way a lot of the LJ syndications work, actually. It's still better than trying to keep up with thirty sites at once, because you a) don't have to check them when there aren't updates and b) end up right at the new material the vast majority of the time.
