I should have been more clear in how I worded that - Brust mentioned that the mistake was a reversal of direction, and, other than that, the world is pretty consistent. So my thought was, maybe Tazendra wasn't grossly off afterall, and Newmarket really is only 30 or 40 miles from the Eastern River. As to Brust's "known mistake", I have a very likely candidate in mind: The Lord of Castle Black, pg 73 - set out from Dragaera City on a long compaign in the service of a certain Dzurlord who sent them west to the city of Thalew in the Pushta. I think Paarfi meant EAST, as the Pushta is consistently to the east of DC, and there is a mountain range to the west. There may be others, but I've collected almost 400 text references that refer to geography in some fashion or the other in Brust's Dragaera novels, and this is the only one where I think a direction was reversed.
