Now that I think on it a bit further, it could be that Barritts marriage
is why he was never able to extract the GW from its encasing.  A GW
plays second fiddle to no-one.

This might also be a reason why noone seems to make active use of more
than one (avoiding a spoiler for LOCB here).  Jealousy.  Would *you* want
to make your GW angry at you?
