Is that the story he's trying to tell? That nothing matters in the end? If so, then let him do so. That might be interesting in a short work, but not in an endless series. When I read a book about heros fighting against oppression, I want to believe something was accomplished at the end. They don't have to live happily ever after - but I don't want the Wheel of Time to make the heroes irrelevant. There are too many fun books to read.
