Phoenix Guards was definitely written during Zerika's reign; I'm fairly certain he refers to her as presently being the monarch. According to booksearch, in fact, TPG was published in the Three Hundred and Ninth year Of the Glorious Reign of The Empress Zerika the Fourth. (Thanks, booksearch!) So clearly some time elapsed between TPG and FHYA, and during that time Zerika stopped being Empress. The question: is Vlad alive in the Three Hundred and Ninth year of Zerika's reign? If not, one can't discount the possibility that Paarfi wrote something before TPG which we, alas, have not had translated for us. If so, it's equally possible that he wrote things between TPG and FHYA which we have likewise not been privileged to receive.
