I'm unclear on the details, but my current impression is that the Great Cycle turned from decadent Phoenix to reborn Phoenix, i.e. that there are _two_ Phoenix reigns in the Cycle. (When Aliera awakes in the Paths, she asks what reign it is, and is answered that it is the reign of a "reborn Phoenix" and not just a Phoenix.) Does this seem correct to anyone else? If so, perhaps Mario had a little help from the Cycle. (Aliera's words upon awakening suggest that Paarfi's account of her claiming the Orb in the name of Adron is pure fancy, thus allowing us to not explain how the Cycle could turn backward from Dragon -> Phoenix or how someone not of the correct House for the Cycle could claim the Orb.)
