Reading his Dread Empire books was my first experience with "realistic" fantasy. And his series about Garrett, P.I., will remind you of a combination of Hamett & Stout. Most folks know him for the Black Company, though. He's recently started another series & released another Garrett, so he's still around (although running short of "metal" titles for Garrett adventures). Snarkhunter
