I'd say that's enough to start a dialogue. Klaas has suggested using the D20 rules, interestingly enough, I had much the same idea. A couple of thoughts: Each House should be it's own Race (naturally). I've bounced around different ideas for stat modifiers, but haven't been able to come up with anything balanced. I've also thought each House should also be its own Class: sort of a specialized Expert for each; so Orca would have sailing and banking skills available, Jhegaala merchant skills, etc. Each would also have a small selection of spells (level 3 and below) available. Other Classes would be available as well: Fighter, Sorcerer, Rogue, Witch, for more advanced development. There would also be Prestige Classes (I'm thinking 17 for some reason). Multi-class characters would be common among Dragaerans (hey, they are elves after all). I don't have a lot of experience with the D20 system, so I don't know how practical that would be. That's enough for now. Any thoughts? Mark At 06:23 PM 3/8/2004 +0000, abcmm at att.net wrote: >To ALL: > >I am new to this list and am wondering how the project is going? With that in mind.... I would have to agree with Matt's general concept. I always understood it as All dragareans are Elves. Yet bred with some sort of relation to the species the house is named after. The Selection process then would be: Dragarean -> House How would easteners work in this model though, I wonder???? And can they buy their way into a house as Vlad did? Easterner -> ?? (Guild, Tribe, ????) I could definitely see Witch/Warlock being one of the options though since we have that as how Vlad is first presented to us in the books... So I would equate that to D&D where you can specialize a character in certain skills, ie a sub-class such as how palladins get inherent advanced skills for their specialty. undead-hunters get access to specific skills such as turn-undead straight of the bat. In this way I could see Dragon lords getting advanced sword skills right at level 1, Jehreg (sp) would get theive's skill and so on... Then it becomes up to the player to choose the direction of specialty after that. Well that is alot to chew on right of the bat that is for sure... any comments?? > If anyone is familiar with the Oriental Adventures > expansion of D & D, I'd suggest doing something like > that. Attribute modifiers 2. a list of in-class skills 3. a list of Feats which are available or unique to the Race 4. for Dragaerans: a list of available spells up to 4th level (but see Magic below) When speaking of the Houses, it is important to remember that there is a difference between being *in* a House and being *of* a House. Dragaerans are connected to their birth house by genetics and 100 years or so of childhood. An Easterner could buy a title in the Jhereg (a Feat?) but would keep the Easterner Race "template"; he would not adopt the Jhereg Race "template" because he is *in* the Jhereg House, not *of* it. Classes Expert, Fighter, Rogue, Sorcerer, Witch This is less than half the standard classes in D&D, but I think the House differences make up for it. Expert is a class that lets the character focus on his Race specific abilities. It would provide substantial Skill Points and frequent Feats, but the in-class skills and available Feats are only those of your Race. Depending on your Race, Expert class level may increase spell caster level. Prestige Classes Prestige Classes I've thought of so far: General (Dragon), Hero (Dzur), Archivist/Loremaster (Lyorn), Warrior (Lyorn), Assassin (Jhereg), Wizard (Athyra), Diplomat (Issola), Troubador/Minstrel/Bard (Issola or maybe Tiassa) Note that the House identifications above do not mean that the Class is necessarily restricted to that House; for example Morrolan is both a General and a Wizard. The linkage is to indicate a house that would tend toward the class and spark the creative juices in thinking of a Prestige Class to match up with each of the Houses so we can end up with 17. Note: I don't think the Teckla will have a Prestige Class, therefore I allowed the Lyorn two. Magic After reading the "Chaos Magic" supplement by Mongoose Publishing I have been leaning toward a flexible magic system in place of spell lists. Spell Casters must make a Skill Roll based on the difficulty of the magic effect desired. Use of magic results in subdual damage (consistent with Vlad's exhaustion after Witchcraft rituals and his comment about mental fatigue when using an umbrella spell in Dragon) but a failed roll can result in real damage as the energies you've tapped into backfire. Can detail this more later, I wanted to get the idea out to start with. The table is open. Debate, discuss. I don't want to "settle" for anything in developing this game so if there's anything I've suggested that doesn't sound exciting to you, bring it up. --Mark "You have the right to freedom of speech, just as long as you're not dumb enough to actually try it." --The Clash From abcmm at att.net Sun Mar 21 07:35:22 2004 From: abcmm at att.net (abcmm at att.net) Date: Sun, 21 Mar 2004 15:35:22 +0000 Subject: Character Creation Message-ID: <032120041535.7826.5e82@att.net> > Hello Again, > Here is where I think we are so far mixed with some of the ideas I've been > developing for the last few months: > > Races > Easterner and Dragaeran (17 Sub-Races) > > Each Race/Sub-Race will have: > 1. I would think a review of all text for a list of Feats and Classes would seem to be needed... Regarding Teckla They seem very apt at the role of Lackey. So I would think you could allow someone to voluntaryly select that house and Class, although I don't know if this could be considered a "prestige class" ....??? What would you get?? A bonus when defending your master??? :-) The only question that jumps at me right off the bat is how any Citizen of the Empire can access the power of the orb. So when an eastener buys into a house they thoretically now have instant access to using the orb for sorcery. In this case are the spells emmidiately available for memorizaion? or does the character have to wait for the next level up? How will that whole "buy into a house" process work I guess is really my question....??? (I appologize if this is getting ahead of things but I can imagine there would be many (myslef included) who would emmediately want to follow in Vlad's footsteps... And it would seem we really need to get that aspect right for the best experience.) Dragaerans are connected to their birth house by genetics and 100 years or so of childhood. An Easterner could buy a title in the Jhereg (a Feat?) but would keep the Easterner Race "template"; he would not adopt the Jhereg Race "template" because he is *in* the Jhereg House, not *of* it. I like your start so far, but I thought there were no "true" Jhereg .... ah here it is .... In Jhereg chapter 9 from the book search "They played around with jheregs and found a way to put human-level intelligence into a brain the size of a rednut, but they never put any jhereg genes into Dragaerans." So it seems to me that Jheregs would have to be like a sub class that someone who wants to be a Jhereg would need to choose either Easterner or one of the other 16 houses, get those bonuses and weakneses, then join Jhereg sub-class and get another set of bonuses and weaknesses added on. Any thoughts on that? I can't recall if the other list has been quiet so long that it no longer has anything useful on it. It was a Yahoo group, if you want to go looking for it. I mention this mainly because I've seen a re-occurring "lets make an RPG", there is a flurry of activity, then it dies away, then a new group of people make a list or sign on to this one (or one of the two others) and the it all starts over again...
