This is a commonly held generalization that is not true. One of my hobbies is genealogy, and I can tell you that you can have brothers, or fathers and sons, one of whom is Mc and the other Mac. It can change between generations. Some of it gets influenced by the social stigma of being a Mc (Mick) in New England.
