Brust books you didn't like (was: Where did you begin?)

Out of curiosity, I leafed through the first book and was struck by how 
utterly *bad* the writing is.  Never mind the overt evangelism -- if the 
story was good enough, I could dismiss that -- but the quality of the actual 
writing just plain sucked.

This is a series that would never sell *unless* it pandered to a particular 
audiences religious convictions.  I don't know how many times I've had to 
hold my tongue when some well-meaning acquaintence recommended them as "a 
really good series!"

It's hard not to like Lewis, even as one grits one's teeth at some of his 
arguments.  I would recommend reading Greg Egan's novella "Oracle", however. 
  It's a sly rebuttal, of sorts, to Lewis.
