Both Phoenixes, no cycle change. This is wrong, of course -- Tortallik was the last emperor of the Great Cycle of the Phoenix, Cycle of the Phoneix, Reign of the (decaying) Phoenix. [is there another way they distinguish the first and last Phoenix in a cycle where there are both?] Wheras Zereka is the first emperor of the Great Cycle of the Dragon, Cycle of the Phoenix, Reign of the (rising) Phoenix. Admitedly, Paarfi claims that 500YA takes place "In the Year of the Hawk, In the Turn of the Orca, In the Phase of the Dragon, In the Reign of the Phoenix, In the Cycle of the Phoenix, In the Great Cycle of the Dragon, Or, the 532nd Year of the Reign of Tortaalik the Third", which seems incorrect; the Great Cycle didn't turn until Zereka returned with the Orb, after all. However, Paarfi is a partial narrator. >Other things suggest this as well. I believe there are multiple >references to 'the <house> reign of the <xth> cycle' and to '<house> >emperor <name> of the <xth> cycle.' Even allowing for Paarfiisms, >that sort of usage wouldn't come up unless there was more than one >emperor possible per house reign. Unclear. Paarfi uses the long form and the short form as alternatives, so one could use "532nd Year of the Reign of Tortaalik the Third" or one could use the gc/c/r/p/t/y form. Either could allow for multiple emperors of a House. -- Joshua Kronengold (mneme at io.com) "I've been teaching |\ _,,,--,,_ ,) --^--him...to live, to breathe, to walk, to sample the /,`.-'`' -, ;-;;' /\\joy on each road, and the sorrow at each turning. |,4- ) )-,_ ) /\ /-\\\I'm sorry if I kept him out too late"--Vlad Taltos '---''(_/--' (_/-'
