I have a couple of notions: (1) Paarfi, being unreliable, or wishing to demonstrate that is sources are less than reliable, writes the conflict in the cave such that all of the magical work is carried out by Grita, Tazendra & Sethra Lavode, when the real story would have included the use of the amulet (or chain). No, I'm not sure why he would do that. Perhaps it's a state secret? (2) S. Brust is in fact giving us a scene whereby the Jenoine might learn of the existence of the chain, which might then lead them to track down its current owner (after a few hundred years), and give said owner the means to use that chain to rebuild a Great Weapon. I realize that that's kind of convoluted, but nevertheless.
