Based solely on the above information (without doing any extensive searching for Hungarian possibilities) I'd suggest Hazelnut. It fills the bill admirably. Granted it's not red, but I can't think of any commercially available nut that is red and turns things red that come in contact with it. (Unless you want to explore the Betelnut connection. *heh*)
