I suspect that when a new book in a series comes out, people in
general have two behaviors:

1) They buy the new book, perhaps not recognizing it is part of a
series or perhaps being fans who already own the prior novels.

2) They recognize that it is a series, and buy the first book of
that series.

The number of people who will buy only the 2nd book in a series
when the third book has just come out is presumably a very small
number.

People like you, the next time they are in a bookstore, since
you now have books 1 and 3.
