Well, I'm the only person I know who didn't expect to land in the middle of the Black Death until it started happening. That lack of expectation allowed me to form strong emotional bonds with the characters, and the subsequent horror was greatly enhanced by that attachment. This despite Scott's warning that it was a book where people recommended that one not become too attached to the characters.
