You're right...maybe it's the word "pushed".  To me, it gives the 
impression of being forced down a specific path - and I'd prefer to 
think Vlad had "free will".

Although, in reading your example it occurred to me that if Vlad's 
father was manipulated into being very pro-Dragaeran, thereby 
forcing a title, sorcery and sword fighting lessons on Vlad, would 
that not in turn give Vlad the opportunity rebel and take up an 
interest in witch-craft?  (Apparently I don't care if Vlad's father had 
"free will" - go figure)
